EL CAMINO DE LAS MISIONES
for SATB, Native American Flute, Guitar, Percussion
A large 20’ minute work commissioned by the San Antonio Choral Society in 2018 for the city of San Antonio Tricentennial. San Antonio is home to five restored 18th century Spanish missions along the San Antonio river. This music amplifies a dramatic aspect of each mission as you encounter each along what was known as “The Mission Road” (El camino de las misiones). It is meditative and reflective music. The texts use a variety of English, Spanish, and Coahuiltecan (a Central Texas Native language).
I. YANAGUANA – The Alamo: Coahuiltecan Indian language phrases to reflect the Native American presence and need for water.
II. LUX SIT – Mission Concepcion: A dramatic solar illumination occurs every August 15 at this mission. Features a Latin text on light.
III. THE MISSION BELL – Mission San Jose: The unique single bell tower featured in a fantastical dream text.
IV. BEFORE THE STILL SKY – Mission San Juan Capistrano: Remembering the dead. Many Native Americans bones were returned to this mission and reburied in a painful reminder of the past.
V. LET US KNOW PEACE – Mission Espada: A call for us to seek peace through a text written by the Cheyenne that musically brings back the opening theme with this prayerful ending.
Duration: 18-20’ Choral Scores $3.95. Conductor’s Full Score $25.00

“Although the piece was written for the missions surrounding San Antonio, the text is universal and speaks to our shared cultural heritage. The Boulder Chamber Chorale loved the piece and audience members were “mesmerized” by it. I think conductors, choruses, and audiences will experience it as an exquisitely unifying work of choral art.”
~ Dr. Vicki Burrichter, Artistic Director, The Boulder Chorale, Colorado
“… a spiritual journey through common and universal themes of water, light, bells, death, and peace, all encountered through the backdrop of the historic missions. Traditional and authentic musical styles are combined with languages and instrumentation representative of the various peoples and cultures of the early missions. The freshness and transparency of the music connects to one’s humanity yet evokes the divine, is historically grounded yet timeless, is palpable yet beyond one’s grasp.”
~ Dr. Jennifer Seighman, Artistic Director, San Antonio Choral Society

SYMPHONY NO. 1 “BLUE”
for Soprano, Chorus, and Wind Ensemble
A five movement choral symphony for solo soprano, SATB chorus and wind ensemble based on a text by the composer. The narrative text, “Blue”, is rooted in the notion of the loss of hope and the process of reconnecting with it. The music is carefully orchestrated to avoid inherent balance problems between winds and voices. Oratorio-like and dramatic in nature. Completed in 1999 and commissioned by a consortium of 42 university wind ensembles. A minimum of 75 singers is recommended for balance concerns with the winds. The text is available upon request. Grade 5-6.

“… James Syler’s ‘Symphony No. 1’ … is a major addition to the wind ensemble repertoire. What immediately strikes the listener about this composition with a title ‘Blue’ is the depth of the text and music and the absence of all of the possible stereotypes that could be associated with such a title.”

THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTHONY
for Chorus and Wind Ensemble
Anthony of Egypt (251-356) was a 3rd century hermit, saint, and father of monasticism in the early church. His life and account of being tempted and tormented in the Egyptian desert were popularized through the first hand account of Athanasius (296-373) in his book The Life of Antony. The six musical sections of this work are titled by phrases I found memorable from my reading of The Life of Antony. I’ve approached the Temptation of St. Anthony as an analogy for the process of temptation – approach, doubt, temptation, torment, relief, and joy. The music is filled with drama, sensuality, horror, and strangely enough, joy.

“The vocabulary ranges from thorny tone clusters to soaring vocal lines to beautiful traditional harmonies. The effect of the combined choral and instrumental forces is sonically powerful and intensely emotional.”
